I’ve always had an intense sensitivity to sound and harmony, and I’ve always been able to hear the key of a room. Just like a wine glass can be made to sing or a seashell has a sound even though it’s inanimate, a room has its unique acoustic fingerprint. Since I was a kid, I’ve also been able to sing to a room in such a way that the room will sing back to me much louder than I’m singing to it. Led by enigmatic singer-songwriter Matt Johnson, UK new wave icons THE THE return to the Sydney Opera House for two performances spanning their genre-hopping four-decade career. Selling out all shows on her last visit to Australia, and adding additional dates to satisfy demand, Laufey’s global popularity is bigger than ever!
LAUFEY RETURNS TO AUSTRALIA FOR BEWITCHED: THE GODDESS TOUR – SEPTEMBER 2024
I had to crawl up the spine, this column of space that goes all the way up to the top. I worked with Australian singers on that project, which brought Aboriginal, Chinese, and Christian music into the compositions that I was forming from the found music that the singers brought with them. Foyers will be open 90 minutes pre-show for Concert Hall and Joan Sutherland Theatre performances, and two hours pre-show for Western Foyer venue performances.

The English artist’s practice is deeply based in sound; he employs sonic vibrations to make hands-free paintings, and he draws out the natural resonance in spaces small and large to create his works. For his ongoing Resonance Project, started in 2007, he invites singers to perform in a way that calls forth the natural harmonics of architectural spaces. Below, the artist reveals the sound-gathering that goes into his art-making—work that takes him from Paleolithic caves to Brighton’s sewers.

The scale of the shells was chosen to reflect the internal height requirements, with low entrance spaces, rising over the seating areas up to the high stage towers. The smaller venues (the Drama Theatre, the Playhouse and the Studio) are within the podium, beneath the Concert Hall. A smaller group of shells set to the western side of the Monumental Steps houses the Bennelong Restaurant. The podium is surrounded by substantial open public spaces, and the large stone-paved forecourt area with the adjacent monumental steps is regularly used as a performance space. Ticket purchases and collection at our Box Office is discouraged and eTicket or postal delivery methods should be used, wherever possible.

Tensions between the client and the design team grew further when an early start to construction was demanded despite an incomplete design. This resulted in a continuing series of delays and setbacks while various technical engineering issues were being refined. The building was unique, and the problems with the design issues and cost increases were exacerbated by commencement of work before the completion of the final plans. Of the two larger spaces, the Concert Hall is in the western group of shells, the Joan Sutherland Theatre in the eastern group.

Well and truly coming in to her own as a performer, writer and instrumentalist, Laufey aims to bring jazz and classical music to her generation in avenues not previously explored by the genre. Long before the famous Sydney Opera House on Bennelong Point, the city of Sydney, Australia, had several entertainment venues described as "opera houses". Choose between The Opera Gala in the Concert Hall, featuring opera’s most beautiful music, or a staged opera performance, in the splendour of the Joan Sutherland Theatre. In the wake of the resignation, the government appointed a new panel of experts under government architect Ted Farmer to complete the Opera House. The project was now onto stage three, the interiors and crucial acoustic design. The Arup engineers had spent four years trying to create a roof design that was replicable between the 10 separate shells and could therefore be prefabricated on site.

And then you can see me in the concrete tip of the highest point of the Sydney Opera House. That was a project for the Sydney Biennial where I was offered the entire opera house as my resonant instrument. I was able to tune the whole building, marking on a map and even on the building the notes that the building would sing.
